What is Missing From This Picture?

Mission: The World We Never Knew
Location: Earth Orbit

As the Montana came closer to Earth Lt. Mann finally said,

"Captain, you are not going to believe this, but I am picking up a Klingon Patrol heading right for us. Moreover, sir, they are armed."

"What??" replied Captain Mann.

But before anything else could be said, a Klingon ship appeared and fired on the ship, rocking it back and forth.

"Captain, they hit us right in our main batteries. If they do that again, we will be crippled. Orders sir..." asked Lt. Mann.

Captain Adams was so stunned that he did not immediately respond. Then seconds later he replied:

"Battle Stations!"

Murphy immediately pulled up the ship's intercom, "This is a red alert! All hands to battle stations! This is not a drill!" He closed the intercom and turned to Adams. "Captain, it might be a good idea to either surrender or retreat until we can learn more about what's going on here."

The Captain looked at Murphy and did not reply directly to him. Instead his orders did the replying:

"Lock phasers on the lead ship and return fire."

"Aye sir" came the reply.

The ship fired all its phasers at the Klingon ship and they hit it hard. The lead ship was destroyed.

"One ship destroyed, Captain" came a voice from the weapons officer.

"It should not have been that easy" replied Adams.

"What the devil is happening here?" he murmured between himself while frantically working at his console overseeing damages incurred during the initial hit and rerouting and balancing the power to the various systems of the ship.

"Whatever is going on here, is not normal. Turning to Commander Murphy he said, "Commander, unless you object, I suggest we get out of here for now."

Murphy had been standing by the weapons officer watching the tactical readout. "Agreed, Captain."

"Helm, move us out of range of those ships and find us a place to hide, and do it fast" ordered the Captain.

The ship moved off away from earth orbit and very quickly went into warp again.
