Captain Michael Murphy looked out the exterior window of his quarters at the planet below. They had been in orbit for far too long.

As much as he understood the importance of the different missions the Montana had been sent on, for him there was nothing like feeling of exploring somewhere new. Scouting planets and seeing what was special about them, deciding which ones were suitable for colonization, seeing the results of scientific study on the soil, flora, and fauna. These were the things he was really passionate about.

He remembered the excitement of the shuttle mission to the unknown, after they found transporters and sensors would not be helpful to their exploratory mission on Cycan III. But that had been over a week ago.

He still felt excited, but it was overshadowed by the disappointment of the planetary ion storms getting worse instead of better. At this point, the away teams were no longer on stand-by, but instead completing other assignments as they waited. He knew the shuttle assignments might need to be changed, and was prepared to deal with that once they predicted another lapse in the ion storms.

He knew the crew could sense the change in his mood, and resolved to find something to distract himself. But that would be tomorrow. Today was done.
