Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Dezkar has a bit of an offputting personality. He is brash, opinionated and will say anything that comes to mind regardless of who is present. He is not a typical Starfleet officer, often showing contempt for authority. He will obey orders, if those orders make sense to him. Most people find him to be full of himself, resulting in very few close friendships. The few people that have gotten to know him find him to be a devoted friend, in his own way. Dezkar despises his first name, and thus uses the shortened version ‘Dez’. Dez is adept at finding hard to find items, specifically those classified as ‘contraband’. He is also highly skilled at hiding these items, a talent acquired from his time spent with the criminal underbelly. Dez fancies himself a bit of a ‘ladies’ man', an attribute that has landed him in trouble on many occasions. |

| Personal History | Dezkar was born on El Auria in 2181. He knows very little of his parents as he was given up for adoption by his mother at birth. All he knows is her first name – Luira. He spent his childhood in foster homes, changing homes frequently. From age 11 to age 15 he stayed with his last foster family. It seemed that the family was going to adopt him, or provide him a permanent home. When the decision began to linger, Dez decided that it would be better to leave than endure the hurt of denial. He then set out on his own. For the next two years, Dez did whatever he could to survive, which mostly meant doing the jobs that no one else wanted. At the age of 17, he was taken in by a group that liked his quick-thinking and clever wit. It was here he began to learn about starships and their systems. Dez was not oblivious to the fact that he was aiding a criminal organization. He soon became part of the ‘family’, growing more comfortable with maintaining and repairing their equipment. They soon came to rely on his skills, his acumen for all things mechanical growing exponentially by the day. He soon surpassed the other mechanics in his Engineering abilities, becoming known as somewhat of a ‘genius’ by comparison, though his solutions were generally unique. When one of their more lucrative jobs went awry, the group was forced to flee El Auria, Dez along with them. He felt no attachment to his native homeworld. Dez’s new family was eventually forced to disband, everyone going their own way. For many years, Dez made himself useful in whatever organization would have him. His life became one lived in the moment, always needing to be onto the next job. He continued to hone his skills, including adding weapons technology to his repertoire. Before long, he found himself being sought after for his skills, often at the end of an energy weapon that he’d constructed. One night in the year 2271, Dez was apprehended by heavily armed soldiers upon returning to his home. The woman in charge identified herself as being affiliated with a covert government organization he wasn’t familiar with, other than being connected to Starfleet – an organization Dez made certain to steer clear of. She informed him that some of his weapons had been used in several high-profile battles, making him somewhat of a local celebrity within certain circles. This had garnered him the wrong kind of attention. In exchange for his cooperation in identifying certain key conspirators, Dez was offered a limited-time deal which he graciously accepted: Join Starfleet, disappear and never look back. For the next two years, Dez worked with his arresting officer and her superiors to build a criminal case against many of his former associates. Dez knew that if he was discovered, his former ‘friends’ would not hesitate to eliminate him. As time went on, Dez began to develop feelings for the woman that was responsible for his situation – feelings that he was led to believe were reciprocated. Upon completion of their arrangement, Dez was handed over to Starfleet Security, the finer details of their arrangement being overlooked. He then realized that he had been used and that any romantic feelings alluded to had been fabricated. Dez was heartbroken. He was left with two choices: join Starfleet Academy – an organization that proved itself to be less than trustworthy – or spend time in a Starfleet prison where he would surely be discovered by his former associates. Neither was acceptable to him, but he ultimately agreed to enlist in Starfleet Academy in order to keep moving. Starfleet Academy Dez’s time at Starfleet Academy was tumultuous to say the least. His aversion to authority and structure proved difficult, resulting in several marks on his record. Most of his Professors considered him a lost cause. If not for one particular Professor of Transporter Theory taking pity on him and helping him adapt, he would have surely washed out. Despite the mentorship, Dez still managed to get himself into trouble. His permanent record reflects several reprimands from his time in the Academy, including Attendance issues, Insubordination, inter-personal issues and instances relating to the acquisition and disbursement of contraband. Despite his trouble complying with authority, Dez was able to graduate, being assigned to Starbase 12 as his first posting, despite his wishes to stay moving. Starfleet Career Dez served as a Support Craft Mechanic on Starbase 12 from 2277 - 2280. He kept a fairly low profile here, building a reputation for his expertise with Engines and creative solutions to difficult mechanical problems. In his off-hours, Dez continued to be a source for hard to find items. In 2280, Dez was granted his wish to serve aboard a starship and landed a commission on the USS Scovill as her Shuttlebay lead Mechanic. Dez found starship life more difficult than expected, being essentially ‘trapped’ on the same ship with the same people. He developed a reputation as a difficult person to work with, and almost impossible to work for. He continued to run his acquisition services with greater difficulty, being discovered in 2281 smuggling contraband Alcohol. This resulted in a reprimand on his record. He served aboard the Scovill until 2285 when he was transferred to the USS Helin as an Engineering Officer. Dez served aboard the USS Helin from 2285 - 2288 where he received his first Commendation. During a shuttle survey mission, the shuttle’s navigation systems were compromised, resulting in the crew having to make an emergency landing on a nearby moon. With atmospheric conditions being less than optimal, Dez was able to modify the shuttle’s environmental systems to be a safe haven for the crew until they could be rescued. Without his ability to adapt quickly, the mission and crew would have been lost. A Notable Mission Contribution appears on his record as a result. From 2288- 2289 Dez served aboard the USS Lantree as an Engineering Officer. In 2289 he was promoted to Assistant Chief Engineer for his knowledge and improvisation during several key missions. He was later transferred to the USS Potemkin under the same position. From 2289 - 2290 Dez served aboard the USS Potemkin, later being transferred to the USS Columbia. Dez served aboard the USS Columbia from 2290 - 2292. During a brutal conflict in 2291, the Columbia’s Chief Engineer was gravely wounded. Dez was afforded the field commission of Chief Engineer, under which he excelled, receiving the Captain’s Commendation for Service. He continued to have difficulties with inter-personal relations, which he typically solved with some of his ‘creative solutions’. During his tenure as the Columbia’s Chief Engineering Officer, Dez received word that his only friend from the Academy, Jorren, had been killed in combat. Dez took this news with great sorrow, coping with the use of alcohol. He let his grief interfere with his duties, a reprimand for Public Intoxication resulting on his record. He was placed on Disciplinary Suspension following, being demoted to Shuttlebay Lead Mechanic and transferred to the USS Emden under this position. From 2292 - 2293, Dez served aboard the USS Emden as Shuttlebay Lead Mechanic. He kept his head down here, doing his best to blend into the background and stay out of trouble…mostly. In 2293, Dez was given a second chance being transferred to the USS Montana as her Chief Engineering Officer. |
